Inverness resident believes post from Lanarkshire was tampered with

An Inverness resident believes that post that arrived a week before Christmas Day was tampered with – resulting in the contents going astray.

The resident of Mason Road contacted us following our recent investigation into how late postal deliveries are across the Highlands and Moray.

People have been raising concerns about the postal services for a while.

She said: “My cousin had posted to me an envelope on Friday, December 12 by recorded delivery at the cost of £5.75 from Post Office, Holytown, New Stevenson, 1st Class mail which arrived at 3.30pm at our address in Mason Road Inverness on Thursday, December 18, which I signed for from postman.

“When I turned it over to open it, I noticed that the envelope had been taped with extra-wide tape half-way down the envelope. I thought that it looked suspicious so I opened it at the top.

“When I opened it, the contents were missing – which should have been my birthday card, Christmas card and gift voucher for Marks & Spencer worth £40.

“I immediately phoned my cousin to say that the envelope had been tampered with. Something has happened between Holytown Post Office and Inverness Post Office. We contacted Holytown Post Office but no joy even telling them that it had been recorded delivery.”

The tape aroused suspicion.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We are very sorry to hear about this customer’s experiences. We would advise that they raise a request with Royal Mail so they can investigate the matter.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We’re very sorry to hear about this experience and understand how upsetting it is, particularly at this time of year. Letters travel through a large and complex network involving both machinery and manual handling, and while the vast majority of mail moves through our network securely, damage can occasionally occur and we take any report of missing contents extremely seriously.

“We’d encourage the customer to contact us directly so we can look into what may have happened and provide appropriate support.”
