Locals have described the smell as ‘overwhelming’
A council is investigating reports of a foul odour reported in numerous locations across a Welsh city. Newport City Council said its environmental health team is investigating after members of the public reported smelling an odour in a number of areas in Newport over the last week.
A statement released by the local authority on Wednesday afternoon reads: “We are actively investigating the source of the odour and have been liaising with relevant partner agencies as part of our enquiries.” Dozens of people said they had noticed a smell in the city in recent days.

Another said there was an “unbearable smell” near the bus depot on Corporation Road. Someone else described the stench as “overwhelming”.
Another said they noticed the smell as soon as they drove into Newport. “It comes through the blowers in the car,” they said. Others reported they noticed it whenever close to the river.
In a post on Facebook, Newport City Council asked anyone noticing a smell to contact them via this link, or by reporting it on the website.
The post reads: “The council’s environmental health team have been investigating reports of an odour reported in locations across the city.
“We are actively investigating the source of the odour and have been liaising with relevant partner agencies as part of our enquiries.
“We would encourage anyone detecting such a smell to contact us so that we can build a better picture of affected areas.”
