Invisible Systems: 20 years of innovative eco-conscious support for the UK’s biggest businesses

A trailblazing Internet of Things (IoT) solution provider based in Manchester, Invisible Systems, is proudly celebrating 20 years of ground-breaking innovation and excellence.

From its original roots as a Cumbrian-based business, the business has grown to become a global force in smart monitoring solutions. This milestone not only marks its remarkable journey but also highlights its commitment to both the local community and the broader goal of sustainability.

Founded in 2003 by visionary Pete Thompson, Invisible Systems was conceived during a flight from the US with a mission to revolutionise energy monitoring and consumption reduction.

A turning point came in 2006 when the much-loved bakery chain, Greggs, became their inaugural major client. This partnership was established to ensure precise temperature control for fridges, safeguarding Greggs’ products for consumption.

Fast forward almost 20 years, and this collaboration continues to flourish, dedicated to reducing energy consumption and preserving the quality of their iconic food products nationwide.

Other brands and organisations quickly followed and today, Invisible Systems provides monitoring solutions to a breadth of prestigious clients across multiple sectors ranging from the BBC and Royal Mail to National Grid, Network Rail, Vodafone, Balfour Beatty, and many more.

As a British business, it also supports other local businesses, with the design and manufacturing of its products all coming from right here in the UK.

With the signing of the Paris Climate Accord in 2015, the demand for sustainability and carbon emissions reduction became a top priority for businesses worldwide and Invisible Systems found themselves at the forefront of this international shift, meeting the increasing demand for eco-conscious solutions.

Today, Invisible Systems captures over one million data points globally. This data is then converted into actionable insights, helping factories and construction sites reduce energy consumption, assisting local housing authorities in ensuring residents’ comfort, and collaborating with the NHS and its suppliers to safeguard vaccines and medical devices by maintaining precise storage temperatures.

Having begun as a small operation with just eight members, the Invisible Systems team is now 40 strong, with a 50/50 male-to-female senior leadership team, steering Invisible Systems away from what is often a male-dominated industry.

Having split operations between Cumbria and central Manchester for several years, last year Invisible Systems made the strategic move to new offices in Lowry Mill, Swinton, Manchester. This relocation coincided with the appointment of Jamie Robertson as chief executive officer, signifying a new era of growth and innovation.

With the race to reach net zero now a top priority for many organisations and governments globally, plus increasing economic pressures, the demands on companies like Invisible Systems will only continue to grow.

Invisible Systems remains committed to building pioneering solutions from right here in Manchester, that both drive businesses and support communities, ensuring a greener, more efficient, and prosperous tomorrow.
