IPC parcel volumes up 10%+ across industry in 2020

Preliminary findings from International Post Corporation (IPC) IPC Global Postal Industry Report 2021 Key Findings shows that the benefit to the delivery industry from the pandemic is still in effect.

Holger Winklbauer, CEO of IPC states: “Posts around the world have rapidly responded to the huge increase in e-commerce volumes throughout the pandemic.

While the pandemic added to letter mail volume declines, parcel volumes grew in 2020 and in 2021. Aggregate postal industry volume grew to €442.6bn in 2020, up by €20.5bn in 2019. Parcel volumes drove revenues up by €19.3bn across the sector while mail revenue fell by €6.1bn. Most postal operators reported growth of 10% or more in the same year, and parcels revenues were up 21%.

Mail volumes on average dropped 15.9% in the same period, more than twice that in 2019, and mail revenues declined an average of 4.9%.

In the first half of 2021, postal operators’ revenue was up 10.4% and margins grew 4.2%. Mail volumes grew by 2.5%. With the sustained uplift in parcel volumes, things are looking bright for the industry this year.
