A new report from digital mailbox provider iPostal1 has revealed Alaska is the worst state for porch piracy, with 76.70 average monthly searches online per 100,000 people for key terms related to stolen mail.
The study examined nationwide online search data for relevant key terms, including ‘Amazon delivery stolen’, ‘DHL lost my package’, and more from Google Keyword Planner. The states with the highest average monthly search volume per 100,000 people have been named the top 10 states for stolen mail in 2024. According to the study, ‘USPS lost my package’ is the most popular search term, followed by ‘USPS lost mail’ and ‘porch pirates’.
Hawaii was the second state where packages are most likely to be stolen, with an average monthly search volume of 75.25 per 100,000 people, while Vermont came in third with an average monthly search volume of 74.91 per 100,000 people. The nation’s average was 48.27, according to the study.
Michigan is the state least likely to have packages stolen, with an average monthly search volume of just 32.72 per 100,000 people, 32% below the national average, while Oklahoma and Mississippi were the second- and third-best states for porch piracy at 33.51 and 33.66 respectively.
Jeff Milgram, CEO and founder of iPostal1, said, “In 2023, Capital One Shopping revealed that 75% of Americans had their packages stolen within the last year of the study, equating to 0.46% of all packages, not including those lost or misplaced by delivery services. To prevent packages from being stolen in the future, people can take certain measures to ensure that porch pirates do not target their homes, such as a digital mailbox or a visibility camera.”
