Is it possible to use old stamps? How to return out-of-date stamps and why the Royal Mail now uses barcodes

In an effort to modernize the postal service, Royal Mail has recently begun issuing barcoded stamps.

Customers can exchange their old stamps for the new barcode versions under the scheme.

Customers will be able to watch clips and send personalized video messages by scanning stamp barcodes.

Why has Royal Mail introduced barcode stamps?

Customers will be connected to new services downloaded on the Royal Mail app when the barcodes are scanned on their phones.

The scanned barcode currently directs users to a special Shaun the Sheep video, but personalised video functions are expected to follow.

David Gold, the Royal Mail’s director of external affairs and policy, told GB News that the new stamps would “change the way we use mail.”

“We’re taking the humble stamp, which was created and started in Great Britain in 1840, and we’re bringing it into a new era,” Mr Gold said.

“We’re reinventing it for the twenty-first century.” We’re making a technological connection.”

“Introducing unique bаrcodes on our postаge stаmps аllows us to connect the physicаl letter with the digitаl world аnd opens up the possibilities for а rаnge of new innovаtive services in the future,” sаid Nick Lаndon, Royаl Mаil’s chief commerciаl officer.
