Coronation day is almost here and many are wondering if there will be post. Read on to find out if Royal Mail are delivering on Saturday, May 6.
Eight months after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth, Charles III is finally being crowned as King in London this weekend.
He became King when the Queen passed away, but wasn’t crowned straight away as the coronation requires lots of preparation.
The 74-year-old will go on a procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey where he will officially became the new monarch.
It’s the first coronation most of us have seen in our lifetime and many are confused about what will be open and closed.
Here’s everything you need to know about post…
Is there post on coronation day?
Yes, there will be post as usual on coronation day, Saturday, May 6, as it is not a bank holiday. Only those living in and around Westminster will get no deliveries.
Access will be restricted for those living in certain areas of central London including: EC4V, SE1 7, SE1 8, SW1, W1J, W1K, WC2N and WC2R.
This is due to the King’s procession route and post cannot be delivered to the above postcodes from 7 pm on Friday, 5 May until after the clear up on Saturday.
Customers in that area will have been informed about disruption to deliveries and collections. The Customer Service Point at SW1P 1AA will also be closed on coronation day.
What about bank holiday Monday?
There will be no post at all, including both collections and deliveries, on Monday, May 8 as this is a bank holiday.
Royal Mail never delivers or collects post on public holidays, such as Good Friday, the Spring Bank Holiday and the Summer Bank Holiday.
There aren’t usually three bank holidays in May, but an additional one has been added to celebrated the momentous royal event.
The government says the day is to allow “families and communities across the country to come together to celebrate”.
An extra bank holiday was also called when Queen Elizabeth II’s was crowned in 1953.
Are post offices open?
Post offices will be open with their usual hours on Saturday, May 6. They usually close a few hours earlier on Saturdays.
If your post office is usually open on a Sunday, it will remain so on May 7 too. However, opening days vary by location.
Post offices may be closed on Monday, May 8 for the bank holiday or could be operating with shorter opening hours.
It’s best to call or visit your local store to check as hours differ between branches.
