Jersey’s mail plane to be scrapped and replaced with ferry service

JERSEY’s mail plane service is to be scrapped, Royal Mail has confirmed following a consultation.

The decision, which was officially announced today, means that the Island’s daily mail flight will cease on 7 August.

From then on, all inbound and outbound mail will be carried by the existing ferry service.

Royal Mail argues that owing to the declining volume of letters, using a ferry instead of a dedicated daily flight will offer a more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly option.

They will also be going ahead with their plans to amend the definition of ‘due date’ to allow for an additional working day when delivering to the Island, which Royal Mail said would allow them to ‘continue to offer a reliable service’ without ‘being bound by the definition of due date’.

Jersey Post say this will cause minimal disruption to customers as most items, including Amazon parcels, are already delivered by ferry.
