When King Abdullah’s son was a student at Georgetown, Biden and King Abdullah would meet for breakfast, they have remained friends over the years often visiting one another.

Since Biden has been president the pair have met twice at the White House and once in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Associated Press reported.

On Friday, the First Lady and her daughter and sister wore the traditional head scarf as they toured the Al-Azhar Mosque located in Cairo. The mosque features Islamic architectural designs dating back to the 10th to 19th centuries.

Dr. Mohammed Al Mahrasawy, the head of Al Azhar university, accompanied them through the Sunni Muslim mosque that is known as the world’s premier Islamic institution.

Sunni Islam is the largest branch of Islam and followed by the majority of Muslims.

The itinerary also included a stop at the El Sewedy International Applied Technology School, located just outside Cairo, to visit the students and its teachers.

Biden was greeted warmly, and a welcome poster was placed on the wall. She signed it saying, ‘You are all amazing….Good luck.’

She arrived in the Middle East on Wednesday, her first visit there in her role as First Lady.

It is part of a six-day trip that also includes North Africa and Europe to promote women empowerment and young people. In February, she went to Kenya and Namibia.

In Egypt and Morocco, she has been busy meeting with female educators and young people in an effort to support educational programs and increase economic opportunity, the AP reported.

Her next stop is Portugal, where she is expected to attend with the US Department the 60th anniversary of its Art in Embassies program, which calls attention to how the arts can play a part in diplomacy.

‘The first lady believes that supporting youth across the world is critical to our common future, with education, health, and empowerment at the heart of it,’ said the First Lady’s spokesperson, Vanessa Valdivia.

‘With her visit to the Middle East and North Africa, the first lady will continue to build on her work to empower young people, and reaffirm our commitment to strengthen our partnerships and advance our shared priorities in the region.’
