John Daly smokes a cigarette in neon tartan shorts as golf icon practices at Royal Troon ahead of The Open this week

John Daly is back and playing at The Open in style at Royal Troon this week.

The golfer, known for his eccentric style on the course – was seen walking the links in a pullover sweater and neon green, yellow, and blue shorts in a tartan pattern.

Not only that, but the golfer was even seen smoking a cigarette while on the course.

Daly has about two years left on his exemption entrance into The Open for being a past winner.

The rules give the 58-year-old golfer the right to play in the tournament up until age 60. A recent adjustment to the rule will now only allow winners from 2024 onwards an exemption into the tournament up until age 55.

He won the 1995 edition of The Open at St. Andrews in Scotland after defeating Costantino Rocca in a playoff.

That was the second and most recent major victory of Daly’s notable career – which includes five wins on the PGA Tour and a win at the 1991 PGA Championship held at Crooked Stick in Indiana.

Daly was recently seen in an awkward advertisement for bibles alongside country music star Lee Greenwood. These are the same bibles promoted by Donald Trump.

‘I believe in the military, I believe in God, I believe in Jesus Christ,’ Daly says in the advertisement. ‘I’m not one of these churchgoers but you really don’t need to go to church to believe in our Father.

‘I pray all the time – you know, I’m a golfer and people go “John Daly prays?” Yeah I do because I believe in God.

‘I know one thing: we’re born and we’re gonna die. Please get your faith back, this country needs our faith back.

‘Let’s get God and faith back in our families, our communities. Let’s not keep going where we’re going.

‘I pray for others, I could care less about me, I’d rather pray for others. But hey, give back to Jesus and God.’
