John Lewis appoints new property director

Gafsen will join the John Lewis Partnership on 13 November as the new director of property, responsible for the strategy and management of the Partnership’s property portfolio and reporting into executive director of finance Bérangère Michel.

He will succeed Chris Harris who announced in June that he would step down from his role in November after five years with the business.

Gafsen joins from the Royal Mail Group where he is currently interim corporate finance director, having been property and facilities director since 2007, managing the group’s nationwide freehold and leasehold estate.

Prior to that, he was Royal Mail’s investment director from 2002 to 2006 where he was responsible for appraisals and recommendations of all major group investment projects, as well as leading the mergers and acquisitions team.

Gafsen said: “It’s a great privilege to join the Partnership, home to two of the UK’s most loved brands. With an extensive and valuable property portfolio, we have an important role to play in ensuring it continues delivering value for the long term benefit of customers and Partners for generations to come.”

Michel, added: “I’m delighted to welcome Martin to the Partnership. His wealth of experience will be instrumental in helping to deliver our future growth. I would also like to wish Chris Harris all the best for the future and thank him for his immense contribution to our business.”

It comes after the John Lewis Partnership confirmed earlier this month that Dame Sharon White will not seek re-election for a second five-year term as chair of the retailer. White, who is the first female chair of the John Lewis Partnership, is set to step down in February 2025 after five years.
