JOHN Morgan – drummer of legendary West Country ‘supergroup’ The Wurzels – has died in hospital after contracting Covid-19 while on tour.
The Somerset musician passed away on Friday at the age of 80 in Gloucester Royal Hospital, the band’s management has said.
Described as ‘oldest drummer in captivity,’ Mr Morgan – known as ‘Morgy’ – was part of The Wurzels for more than 40 years having joined the band in 1981, and was still performing with them until a fortnight ago.
The band shot to fame in the 1970s with toe-tapping hits I’ve Got a Brand New Combine Harvester, The Blackbird Song, Don’t tell I, Tell Ee and I am a Cider-Drinker.
Their inimitable blend of saucy jokes and West Country pastiche the old-fashioned way has seen the band remain popular among audiences on the gig and festival circuit up to the present day.

The Wurzel’s accordion player Tommy Banner said: “We can’t believe we shan’t ever see you behind those drums again – we thought you were indestructible.
“With your sharp, quirky Forest wit – oh, you were also a bloomin’ great drummer, just like your hero, Charlie Watts.”
Wurzels manager Sil Willcox added: “We are all in shock, Morgy had the driest of humour and the kindest of hearts and all are thoughts are with his family.”
The Wurzels management said the band intends to continue, and that Mr Morgan will always be remembered and loved by his fans, friends and bandmates.
