Joke Stoke City sale pulled from ebay after bidding reached £65,000

The joke ebay sale of the Stoke City squad for bids starting at 99p has been pulled – after offers reached £65,000.

Disgruntled fan Jeremy Leese had made the spoof listing – “for parts or not working” – as a deflating 2-1 reverse at fellow Championship strugglers Middlesbrough left Stoke in the mire and supporters furious at the club’s fall from grace.

As relegation rivals have caught up games in hand, Stoke have now been plunged to the bottom of the table – and nine out of the last 10 teams in this position at this stage of the season have ended up in League One.

Jeremy wrote on Twitter: “I’ve ended the listing early, stating the item is lost or broken, which is far too close to the truth for comfort.

“Something really has been lost these past few seasons and the bond between the players and fans has most certainly been broken. I hope I made my point.”

Copy cat sales had been set up for clubs including Arsenal and Southend.

The original description had said: “Stoke City FC First Team Squad. Dispatched with Royal Mail second class.

“Not suitable for task for which bought, unreliable and unpredictable, job lot of below average footballers, attitudes questionable, work ethic poor, not advisable to use as dog walkers as cannot hold onto a lead.

“No returns accepted.”

Most of the comments which flooded into StokeonTrentLive were along the same lines.

Jeffery Carrier said: “I wouldn’t even pay 99p for them at the moment.”

Barry Moult said: “Can’t see many non league clubs bidding. If the current players think the Championship is tough, they would get hammered in non league.”

Kevin Alcock said: “99p! Who would pay that much for any of our players?”

Martin Eagles said: “99p is ambitious.”
