Kacey Musgraves recalls being reprimanded for breaking royal protocol by giving Prince Harry a high-five in 2015 but has no regrets over the casual greeting
There are rules for meeting royals and giving a prince a high-five definitely isn’t one of them.
Country music darling Kacey Musgraves apparently went rogue in 2015 when she went ‘up top’ with Prince Harry at the Royal Variety Performance at Royal Albert Hall but looking back on it she has no regrets.
The 31-year-old recalled the royal faux-pas and the criticism she received at the time when speaking with Access Hollywood this week.
Oops! Kacey Musgraves recalled the awkward moment in 2015 when she broke royal protocol and gave Prince Harry a high-five but said she has no regrets looking back on it in an interview with Access Hollywood
‘Apparently afterwards, the guy that works at the label was like, “No, no, no,”‘ Kacey recollected to the outlet.
‘He was like, “I can’t believe you gave him a high-five. That’s just unbelievable.” He’s like, “No, there’s a way to address the royal family, and a high-five, going up top is not the way.”‘
Musgraves was completely unaware that giving Prince Harry five was something that would be frowned upon. The proper greeting, in her case, would have been to curtsy.
A photo of the moment captured Musgraves in her lemon chiffon colored gown smiling broadly midway through the high-five.

As for the criticism she received, Kacey shrugged it off telling Access: ‘I was like, “I didn’t know. He went in for it, so whatever.”‘
Prince Harry seemed totally at ease with the common gesture and returned her smile.
