Kamala Harris: Vice President has special £50,000 pearl necklace with ‘modern twist’

Kamala Harris, 56, has caught the attention of fans since entering the White House with her smart clothing choices as well as her huge pearl necklace collection. The Vice President has worn pearls since she was at university and even has custom made pieces in her collection.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Brett Afshar, Managing Director at Queensmith, said: “Jewellery’s power to be both sentimental and symbolic is clearly evident throughout history and Kamala Harris’ Inauguration choice is no different.

“Her pearl necklace from R. Wosado features an elliptical link chain necklace with delicate South Sea pearls and brilliant diamonds floating between the links.

“It’s a classic and tasteful choice for such an occasion but it symbolises more than just good sartorial taste.

“The pearls are a direct reference to the ‘Twenty Pearls’, the founders of the first African American Greek-letter sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), of which she is a proud member.

“Following in the footsteps of many First Ladies who wore pearls with a modern twist – and a strong message; diamonds for strength, pearls for Feminism and from lore, gold symbolising the Sun for a new day or bright future, very appropriate for the First Female Vice-President of the US.”

Alexandra also shared that the estimate for such a symbolic piece could be worth upwards of £50,000.

She added: “South sea pearls are the largest of the cultured salt-water pearls, and due to this are considered somewhat rarer.

“Pearls are associated with the moon and Venus and therefore symbolise feminism but are also associated with wealth as they were one of the rarest gems to source throughout history.

“Cultured pearls were first introduced to the world in 1916 Japan by Mikimoto as an easily accessible source of pearls, as prior to this, natural pearls were hand fished by fishermen able to hold their breath for long enough.”
