Kate Middleton has a way of charming children, but yesterday one little boy couldn’t help being overwhelmed with shyness when meeting the royal.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 37, visited Sunshine House Children and Young People’s Health and Development Centre to learn about the Family Nurse Partnership (FNP), a voluntary programme that offers home visits to young first-time mothers.

She was seen bending down to greet Oliver Koroma, 4, but as she accepted a bouquet of flowers from him, he had an attack of shyness and rushed into his mother Chloe’s, 22, arms.

Kate went on to share a laugh with Chloe before the royal called the child ‘so sweet’.

Kate – who wore a £270 polka dot Equipment blouse, £520 Gianvito Rossi heels and black culottes for the outing -couldn’t keep the smile from her face as she met parents and children who have benefited from the services.

As she introduced herself to Chloe and Oliver, he seemed overwhelmed by the situation, sucking his thumb and staring down at the ground.

After a moment’s pause, he handed Kate the bouquet of flowers before rushing into Chloe’s arms for a cuddle.

The gracious royal exchanged a laugh with her fellow mother, before calling him ‘so sweet’ and asking if the family lived locally.

Later, Chloe revealed Kate had been particularly gentle with her son, and asked him about the football shirt he was wearing.

Chloe revealed: ‘She [the Duchess of Cambridge] asked how old [my son] Oliver is and what football shirt he was wearing.

‘She said children grow up so quickly and she can’t believe George is six already.’

The royal has made early years development a cornerstone of her royal work, and she appeared particularly engaged as she heard more about the work carried out by the FNP.

As part of the programme, mothers aged up to 24 are partnered with a specially-trained family nurse who visits them regularly, from early pregnancy until their child is two.

The programme helps young mothers to have a healthy pregnancy, improve their child’s health and development, and reach their goals and aspirations.

Much of Kate’s visit was conducted in private so she could discuss in confidence the circumstances of the parents helped by the FNP programme, which was established in 2007.
