Drawing comparisons between Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, and the late Queen Mother, royal observers suggest Middleton’s subtle strength echoes the monarch’s steadfast character.
Daily Mail’s royal editor, Rebecca English, along with its diary editor, Richard Eden, conversed with Jo Elvin, host of the podcast “Palace Confidential,” to delve into the Duchess’ perceived role in Buckingham Palace’s response to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021.
Valentine Low, in a recent edition of his book “Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown,” underscores Middleton’s pivotal influence in shaping the Palace’s statement. An unnamed royal insider hinted at Middleton and Prince William’s intent to harden the Palace’s stance.
Discussing the Duchess’ subtle influence, the source in Low’s book opined, Middleton “does not receive adequate recognition due to her nuanced approach.” This sparked a debate, with Elvin interpreting the commentary as portraying Middleton in a ‘Machiavellian’ light.
Contradicting this characterization, English asserted Middleton was more a “steel marshmallow,” drawing parallels with the late Queen Mother. “Throughout my research for a major Daily Mail series on the princess, I found the consensus to be that she’s reminiscent of the Queen Mother, an ‘iron fist in a velvet glove’,” English revealed.
Emphasizing Middleton’s tenacity, English elaborated, “She’s a proponent of the belief that there are multiple approaches to a problem. You can make your point without raising your voice or storming off, but when it comes to principles you firmly believe in, you should hold your ground.”
Backing the claims of Low’s book based on her undisclosed sources, English stated that Middleton’s insistence on retaining the line “some recollections may vary” in the Palace’s response stemmed from a conviction that “the statement will be historically scrutinized, and unless this phrase or something similar is included, everything Prince Harry and Markle have said will be accepted as truth.”
“She avoided getting embroiled in trivial matters but recognized the gravity of this situation and how it would impact the family’s image. Many might view her with newfound respect as a result,” commented English on the Duchess’ stance.
Eden, weighing in on the matter, remarked that Middleton’s purported involvement in the Palace’s statement provided a “refreshing insight” into her character.
