Kevin McDonald on the Royal Mail mishap which almost cost Dundee United star his brother’s kidney

Dundee United new boy Kevin McDonald has told of how a botched Royal Mail delivery almost cost him his brother’s kidney.

The ex-Scotland man underwent a transplant last year after his older sibling Fraser donated one of his kidneys.

However, the former Sheffield United, Burnley and Fulham midfielder nearly never got it as a mishap by a postie paired him with his best friend instead.

His brother’s blood sample was delivered to the wrong lab, leading to some confusion for the 33-year-old, who, eventually, got things straightened out with doctors.

The United star said: “It was quite strange because it actually wasn’t meant to be my brother at first!

“It was meant to be donated by my best mate Danny Millar.

“The whole thing was actually down to Royal Mail. I don’t know how they have come into the story of my kidney transplant!

“The Royal Mail sent my brother’s bloods back to the wrong place.

“People that I had nominated had blood things sent out.

“My mates sent them back and my brother sent his back so I went to see the surgeon.

“It was an appointment in London on a random Tuesday night and the surgeon was like: ‘Danny Millar will be doing your transplant’.

“I asked: ‘But what about my brother?’ And the surgeon said: ‘We have not had your brother’s blood back’.

“It was a strange situation. But I suppose all things work out for a reason. Something fell through with Danny’s blood on the medical side.

“But by that time my brother’s blood had been analysed, and he ended up giving his kidney to me.

“The Royal Mail had sent his sample somewhere else.”

McDonald is back in the game after 19 months out and is in the United squad that travel to St Johnstone today.

Should he get on the pitch and get some Premiership minutes under his belt, it would represent a huge milestone after his life-changing surgery.
