King Frederik of Denmark puts on a sophisticated naval display as he and his wife Queen Mary disembark from Dannebrog yacht – bringing an end to the royal sailing season

King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark put on a sophisticated naval display as they marked the end of the royal sailing season.

The couple officially disembarked from the Dannebrog royal ship in Copenhagen earlier this morning, signalling a finish of their traditional summer tour at sea, which kicked off in May.

The monarch, 56, looked dapper in his military uniform, appearing high spirits as he waved at wellwishers.

His wife, 52, was effortlessly elegant in a chic navy suit which she accessorised with a sage green clutch.

To add a pop of colour, the mother-of-four tied her chestnut tresses back with a patterned bandana.

Mary highlighted her natural glow with a dewy make-up base, lashings of blush, and a touch of mascara. 

The couple grinned and basked in the sunny weather as they left the royal ship. 

Earlier this year, the couple boarded the Royal Yacht Dannebrog as they set off for their tour – their first since the King ascended the throne in January.

Over the summer, they have visited the  Faroe Islands and Greenland in June and July. In August, they also sailed around Danish municipalities.

It comes as last week, Mary looked sombre as she joined her husband for Flag Day in Copenhagen today. 

The royal looked solemn during the emotional day, which honours people who have been sent on a mission by Denmark.

Mary went to the Military Headquarters Kastellet, where she and her husband participated in the traditional wreath-laying ceremony for Danish soldiers abroad.

She sported a simple, yet chic, black dress with a square neckline and quarter-length puffy sleeves and donned pink strappy heels.

Mary paired this with a sophisticated large pearl necklace and matching stud, earrings, along with a bracelet. She also opted to wear her classic gold Cartier love bracelets. 

The mother-of-four accessorised her look further with a navy coloured wide-brimmed hat which shielded her face from the sun.  

The Queen wore her glistening brunette tresses down in a sleek straight blow-dry and opted for smoky eyeshadow and pink lipstick. 

King Frederik who was dressed in military regalia, also looked moved as he lay down a wreath. The service was also attended by veterans. 

However, the Monarch managed to crack a smile with his wife as he sat by her side during the ceremonies. 

September 5 is an official day in Denmark to pay respect to deployed soldiers and is marked by a number of different events and ceremonies throughout the day. 

The couple recently said goodbye to their eldest son and heir to the throne, Prince Christian, as he moved away to Africa. 

The 18-year-old is moving out of the family home and heading to East Africa where he will live until December to experience farm work and ‘ deeper learning’.

The doting mother-of-four admitted it’ll be very difficult not having their son around for the next few months.

‘We are going to miss him unimaginably… very, very much,’ she said while attending a ceremony in Copenhagen earlier this month.

She added that both she and King Frederik are excited for him, however, and ‘look forward’ to hearing about his travels upon his return.

The Danish Palace revealed the youngster will be working in farms on his visit while trying out various roles and getting to get to know the community.

He will also learn about the natural landscape in Africa and how locals maintain the balance between work, life and conservation.

Prince Christian follows in his father’s footsteps, and those of his Grandmother Queen Margrethe.

It is tradition for Danish royals in line for the throne to spend a significant time abroad in their youth so they can grow to appreciate the world, a palace spokesperson explained.
