King Frederik’s hilarious navy nickname has been revealed as the Royal Family shared a glimpse inside an upcoming exhibition dedicated to the new monarch.

The royal, 55, ascended the Danish throne with his wife Queen Mary in January after his mother Queen Margrethe abdicated following a 52-year reign.

To celebrate the new King, an exhibition called ‘Frederik – King of Tomorrow’ will open in the Amalienborg Museum within Christian VIII’s Palace in Copenhagen next week.

The exhibition contains objects, paintings, photographs and videos that have been important in the Frederik’s life.

Earlier this week, the Danish Royal Family’s Instagram account shared a preview of some of the items going on display in the exhibition.

This included a bright red hard hat, which Frederik wore when he was serving in Denmark’s navy.

The hat had a label stuck to the front, which read ‘Pingo’. The nickname was reportedly given to him by his peers because how he waddled like a penguin when his wetsuit filled up with water.

Alongside the item, the museum has also put a photo of King Frederik wearing the hat on display.

The undated image shows the King climbing out of a tunnel while the red hat tilts sideways.

In 1995 the Crown Prince began his service as a member of Denmark’s elite special operations forces, the Royal Frogmen Corps. He also completed training in both the army and air force in his younger years.

Other items in the exhibition include one of the royal’s Copenhagen marathon t-shirts, a checked school satchel and a coin featuring his profile.

The exhibition will run from March to September before relocating to the Danish castle of Koldinghus in Kolding.

Earlier this week, the King and Queen put on a united display when they hosted representatives for the Armed Forces, the Air Force and the Emergency Management Board.

In early May, the couple – who have been married for almost 20 years and share four children – will visit Sweden first.

The following week, Frederik and Mary will then undertake an official state visit to Norway.

The Palace also outlined plans for the King and Queen of Denmark to visit the Faroe Islands and Greenland in June and July.

However, the Firm highlighted that the dates for these two trips had not been confirmed.

The Palace said in a statement: ‘The first state visits will provide the occasion for the new King and Queen to meet with the sovereigns in Sweden and Norway, and they will thus mark the close relations between the Nordic monarchies.’

The Royal Yacht Dannebrog has served as the Danish Royal Family’s cruise ship since May 1932 and has travelled over 800,000 miles.
