There’s something disturbing about the UK Government wishing to hang a portrait of the King in every Scottish school and nursery.
No matter your views are about the Royal Family, it feels like an order from a dictatorship such as North Korea rather than a country like the UK. We apparently pride ourselves on democracy, freedom of thought and opinion and the right to hold opposing political views.
Those for and against the monarchy are allowed an equal voice and our schools educate our children on a wide range of views. So making pupils walk under a picture of King Charles every morning seems like imposition of a point of view that shouldn’t be questioned.
And to have one of the UK’s richest men staring down at children in poor Scots communities – where parents are
fundraising for school supplies – sets a poor tone of us and them. It reminds young children that while they can grow up to take part in a variety of roles in life… they’ll never be King.
Parents could come up with better ideas as to where the millions allocated for this plan could be used. But what else should we expect from a Westminster government which is clinging on to power?
London Tories have no idea what matters to the people of Scotland – demonstrated by a string of vile policies they imposed over the last 13 years of their rule. This desperate attempt at bringing the country together should be abandoned just like they’ve given up on any care about what really matters to Scots.
