Knitted postbox topper of The Queen still not returned – and residents want it back

A jubilee postbox topper of The Queen made by an anonymous knitter was removed last week – and still has not been returned, according to frustrated residents.

The “excellent” knitted artwork was placed on top of a postbox in Launceston Road, Wigston, to commemorate the monarch’s 70 year reign, ahead of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June.

Karl Piggin, who has lived on the estate for 52 years and took pictures of the eye-catching creation two weeks before it vanished, said its disappearance was a loss to the local community.

He took the pictures of the topper after the recent storms, meaning Her Majesty managed to survive Eunice and Gladys.

“This was an excellent artwork and really appreciated by the local community,” said Mr Piggin. “I hope it can be located and returned soon.

“It is a real shame it cannot be now enjoyed by local residents.”

The anonymous knitter behind the topper noticed the naked postbox last week and turned to Facebook to aid their investigation, with no avail.

The post, on the Spotted South Wigston Facebook page, read: “Does anyone know where the Queen’s head I made and put on the postbox by little hill Co-op has gone?

“I would like her back, please, as it took me hours and hours to make.”

Support flooded in from fellow residents who spotted the topper before it was taken, while some locals displayed their anger, calling whoever took it a “scumbag”.

One said: “She was there yesterday and she was amazing. I must say you are very talented. I can’t believe some one would take her.”

Others apologised for the shocking behaviour.

One wrote: “[It was] kind to put it on the post box for the community. I’m sorry someone has taken this. How sad.”

An angry resident chimed in: “There’s some right scumbags about, can’t leave anything alone.”
