Landmark royal visit to Oxfordshire town’s Women’s Institute

Princess Anne headed to the Carterton Women’s Institute earlier this month on Thursday, October 9, with pictures now being released.

She attended the hall on the occasion of its 100th anniversary with the president of the institute stating that the Princess Royal “was very supportive and chatted to all our members individually”.

Jan Barnard said: “She was interested in the history of the hall which is 100 years old.

“We explained about the history of the hall and Eveline Gillian – who is our archivist and one of the longest members – spent a few minutes showing Her Royal Highness our archives including photos.”

At a small ceremony the sister of King Charles III unveiled a plaque marking the milestone and cut a cake made by one of the members.

“We explained,” added Ms Barnard, “how the hall is used by the community for all sorts of local events, functions and clubs and these bookings have assisted us to raise funds for the hall renovation project which is nearly completed”.

On the same day, Princess Anne visited nearby RAF Brize Norton which Ms Barnard said has helped the Women’s Institute “enormously with our fund raising”.

She did so in her capacity as honorary air commodore on the occasion of the 24th Squadron’s 110th birthday,

Wing Commander Al Dow said: “These celebrations not only honoured our squadron’s storied past but also highlighted the dedication and professionalism of our people today.”

Also on the day, the Princess of Wales Kate Middleton visited Oxford in what turned into a week of royal visits.
