Latvijas Pasts to build new parcel sorting centre

Latvijas Pasts, the Latvian postal operator, has announced plans to build an 8,000 square metre cargo and sorting unit in response to growing commercial cargo, mail transit and package shipments.

Kristaps Krūmiņš, member of the Latvijas Pasts board, said that e-commerce parcels have grown significantly in recent years, even as mail volumes have fallen.

“Traditional mailings, such as letter correspondence and the press, are on a steady decline from year to year. Consequently, it is not the traditional segment that makes this additional space necessary. But, for example, this year the volume has increased by around 50% in the segment of commercial cargo [..]. And the other segment, it’s more related to the e-commerce segment, different types of Internet purchases. They have very high seasonality and Covid-19 introduces different types of distortions, it is still observed,” Krūmiņš said.

The postal operator is looking for a site and contractors to build the new parcels and cargo centre that will include a new automated sorting line. Procurement for the build programme is to take place early next year with plans to begin construction in the second half.
