The Letters to Heaven post box, now situated at Stockton-on-Tees Crematorium, will allow grieving relatives to send letters to loved ones who are no longer with us.
The white and gold memorial post box can be used to post cards, letters, and other messages.
A spokesperson for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council said: “Every letter put into the post box will be treated with the utmost respect and confidentiality.”
Councillor Clare Besford, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, added: “We all handle grief in our own way, and for some, the act of writing and posting a letter to a departed loved one will bring comfort.
“These Letters to Heaven post boxes help us to remember our loved ones in a special way.
“They give an opportunity for people to post a birthday card, Christmas card, or the last card or letter that they may not have had the chance to send.”
The scheme is being rolled out across the UK after a nine-year-old girl from Nottinghamshire originally came up with the idea for the post boxes – telling her mum she wanted to write to her grandparents who had passed away.
The post box is not owned or serviced by Royal Mail, so no address or stamp is needed on any letters.
