I’ve had problems with my post for 15 years
I read with interest the letters saying that a few people are having problems with postal deliveries recently.
I smile when the national press says the service is dropping to less deliveries that the six a week at present.
Firstly, I have had serious issues with the postal service for about 15 years.
Secondly, I believe the number of deliveries to my address in Wash Common dropped to about two a week but it appears to have increased slightly recently.
It all started when I developed diabetes about 15 years ago and had to have yearly hospital eye check appointments.
I missed so many appointments because I did not receive the appointment letters.
This has not improved, so I now phone them to check if any letters have been sent just before the month for my normal appointment.
I estimate I receive about 20 per cent of letters from the Wokingham Hospital that deals with that subject.
No, that is not a typo, I do miss 80 per cent.
We have checked that they have my address correct and they do.
I have phoned them up again today to find another one is missing.
And the Government want to charge patients who don’t turn up to appointments!
Some NHS letters do arrive.
The ones from my Newbury surgery are postmarked Bath and they never seem to fail.
The situation is the same with letters from BT.
My landline was cut off the other year because four letters in a row from them never arrived, including the bill.
I have put in two official complaints.
All the Post Office says is that the sender should complain.
But how can the sender complain on letters I do not know I have failed to receive?
I complained to our MP. She expressed that she was sorry but said there is little she could do.
I have started recording a list of what post I do receive and on what date.
I have identified certain trends. Magazines, CDs and packages seem to always arrive safely.
The exception to that was bowel test kits which were sent twice and none received.
I get quite a few letters from Clacton and they always arrive safely.
My evidence shows it seems to depend on where the letters come from.
I do not blame the local postmen, all of whom I get on well with and are always very helpful.
This is all very frustrating and worrying especially as I now get at least one appointment a month at a hospital.

Our postal workers do such fantastic work
With regard to recent letters reporting a poor postal service, I also have problems.
I would however like to pay tribute to our fantastic postal workers, who deliver in all weathers cheerfully.
They are underpaid, understaffed and overworked.
Thanks to you all.

What has happened to our postal service?
Can any fellow Newbury residents tell me if the Royal Mail actually still operate in this area?
Where have all the posties gone?
We haven’t seen one in over a week and we’ve been expecting important stuff since the 23rd.
Absolutely ridiculous.

Dog walkers must give the cows their space
Greenham Common is a wonderful place as those of us who have been involved with it for many years know well.
At this time of year the cows on the common are calving.
Those walking dogs are most welcome but should try and avoid small calves and cows.
The cows on the common are well used to dogs but as happened today if a dog actually gets hold of a calf then its mum will come to the rescue and the dog may be injured.
It’s great that common is such a huge space and it is very easy to give cows and calves the room they need.

Boycott Israel until a permanent ceasefire
Israel has been reported as taking over the Rafah crossing, effectively leaving all Gazans trapped by and surrounded by Israel and its military.
Hamas accepted the ceasefire deal, but Israel has rejected it.
Further mass slaughter of innocent civilians is imminent.
Farris (and all MPs) must call for an international boycott of Israel until a permanent ceasefire occurs and all Gazans can safely go home

MP Laura Farris just toes the Tory party line
Will our MP ever use her platform to represent her constituents?
Laura Farris’ Parliamentary career has been a continual toeing of the party line.
Therefore I am not convinced that she will ever actually speak for me and the thousands like me (according to polling, the vast majority), who are desperately hoping for a permanent ceasefire for the Palestinians of Gaza.
As of this morning, and after the Israeli takeover overnight of the Rafah Crossing, this is the list I’ve requested MP Laura Farris demand using her platform as MP for Newbury:
Demand a ceasefire.
Demand the UK Government boycott, divest and sanction Israel.
Demand international peacekeepers take control of the border of Gaza and Israel’s military leave Gaza.
Demand the rebuilding of Gaza and UK support for that rebuild.
But like her limp and ineffectual effort around the horrendous flooding in her constituency, I suspect she will continue to ignore her constituents and just carrying on collecting her vast paycheque.

Sports Hub inquiry is a waste of time and money
Whilst people should be held accountable for their actions, nothing will happen following the Monks Lane Sports Hub inquiry (Newbury Weekly News, May 2).
No one’s going to lose their job or made to pay the money back.
It’s just going to be a finger pointing exercise where one party gets one up on another.
I’m sorry, but this is just another waste of time and, worst of all, public money, money that can be spent on other useful projects the residents of Newbury actually need.
