Calvin Bailey, MP for Leyton and Wanstead, officially opened the Leyton Delivery Office, which replaces the former Leyton High Road site and features a host of environmentally friendly upgrades.
Tonton Mulobo, Royal Mail’s lead customer operations manager for Leyton, said: “Our posties are very excited about our brand-new office. It’s packed with modern facilities that make work better for the team and better for the environment.
“This investment shows Royal Mail’s commitment to creating a workplace that supports our people while working towards our Net-Zero goals.”
Located on the Orient Industrial Park, the office serves customers in Leyton and Clapton and has been designed to support a more energy-efficient operation.
Sustainability features include new EV chargers for its 32-vehicle electric delivery fleet, an air source heat pump, and a cycle shelter to encourage cycling to work.
Mr Bailey met postal workers, toured the facility, and visited the delivery yard to view the electric vans. He said: “It’s great to engage with the posties who keep our society running, and learn about the technologies making Royal Mail delivery more efficient.
“This is the same tech being supported through the Government’s Warm Homes Plan – our businesses, infrastructure and homes can all benefit from lower bills if we get on board with these opportunities.”
Royal Mail has the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet, with over 8,000 vans. In June, the company reported a 20 per cent reduction in average carbon emissions per parcel delivered, further strengthening its position as the UK’s greenest parcel operator.
Royal Mail has pledged to reach Net Zero by 2040 through its ‘Steps to Zero’ environmental strategy, with interim targets set for 2030.
