Licensed grocery store set to stay in Johnstone for another decade

Elected members will be asked to approve the extension for the Hallhill Road unit, known as John’s Shop, for 10 years at Renfrewshire Council’s infrastructure, land and environment policy board on Wednesday.

A paper, which will be considered at the board, explained: “The property was newly constructed and the tenants moved in and opened the licensed grocery store in 2016.

“They are looking to extend their lease to give them longer term security of tenure. The rent has been reviewed and is considered to be at current market level.”

The local authority acknowledged in the report that the current occupier had been a “good tenant” over the last decade and, as such, recommended a lease be concluded on a number of terms and conditions.

If given the green light by councillors, the extension will be for 10 years – backdated from January 19 of this year – and will be a standard full repairing and insuring lease.

The rent will be £12,5000 per annum, with “upwards only” rent reviews every five years.

Last summer, it was confirmed a pharmacy located next door to the shop in Hallhill Road would be staying for another 15 years.

It had the lease extension for its unit approved by elected members on the infrastructure, land and environment policy board at a meeting in August.
