LinkedIn is down for many, and we are not sure why

LinkedIn is down for many users, including on the web and mobile, and we are not sure why.

BleepingComputer has observed accessing LinkedIn shows obscure error messages to users around the world.

As seen by BleepingComputer, when trying to visit LinkedIn, users are seeing the following message:

“An error has occured
Ref A: 213A1CEXXXXXXXXX Ref B: BLUEDGE0406 Ref C: 2021-02-23T18:48:24Z
Uh oh, we seem to have encountered an error. Try going back to the previous page or see our Help Center for more information.”

Of note is the text in Reference B which appears to reflect where the users are connecting from.

As an example, accessing LinkedIn from the East Coast shows BLUEDGE0406 in the Reference B field, but users connecting from London, UK, see LON04EDGE0620.

Reports of LinkedIn users having trouble accessing the service have also been surging since after 1 PM ET, according to Downdetector.

Alternate error message

BleepingComputer noticed on some attempts an alternate error message is displayed when trying to reach LinkedIn, in what appears to be a DNS-related issue.

“Unable to locate the server; the server does not have a DNS entry. Perhaps there is a misspelling in the server name or the server no longer exists; double-check the name and try again. Please double-check the URL (address) you used, or contact us if you feel you have reached this page in error,” reads the message.

LinkedIn mobile app and API down too

In tests conducted by BleepingComputer, LinkedIn’s mobile app was not able to connect to the servers either and fails to load the feed.

Likewise, LinkedIn API is inaccessible too with requests failing or timing out.

“Investigating – We are currently experiencing an issue across the platform that may cause some API requests to take longer or fail unexpectedly. We are investigating the issue and working on a resolution,” reads the API’s status page.

This is a developing story.

Updates — all times in ET:

2:34 PM: added alternate error message

2:40 PM: LinkedIn website and mobile app are now accessible, although the API status page maintains the alert with no further updates yet.

3:00 PM: LinkedIn website and mobile app have gone down again.

~4:30 PM: API status page indicates the issue is resolved. LinkedIn also confirmed the interruption was remediated but did not clearly specify a reason behind the cause.
