Live updates as smoke pours out from blaze by A34

Fire crews tackled a blaze by the A34 last night. Smoke was seen billowing from the scene off Liverpool Road in Newcastle where a caravan was found ‘well alight’.

Now police have launched an investigation after the blaze was determined as deliberate. Dramatic footage shared with StokeonTrentLive shows firefighters at the scene next to flats and and to the rear of a tyre business on Liverpool Road.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service say the blaze – directly opposite Sainsbury’s – did not spread to any of the nearby buildings as crews from Hanley and Newcastle kept it contained to the caravan.

The alarm had been raised just after 10.15pm last night (June 24) with crews able to leave the scene just before 11.05pm. The incident has now been left in the hands of Staffordshire Police.
