Passerby saw smoke coming from building
The fire service was called after a member of the public saw smoke coming from the bottom of the old Royal Mail building in Campbell Street. The centre has been closed for several years but is known to be used regularly by rough sleepers.
A spokeswoman for the fire service said: “We were called at 5.14am to a fire in an industrial, commercial building – the old Royal Mail building. The building is known to be disused other than by homeless people.”
Two pumps were sent to the scene initially but a further four were sent. Breathing apparatus was also sent. Police and ambulance crews were also called to the scene.
“There was some concern that there could still be people inside the building. The building has been swept but it has not been confirmed that there were no persons inside at the time,” the spokeswoman added.
No injuries have been reported from the incident so far and another sweep to check hotpots and to ensure nobody is inside is taking place.
A fire investigation will be carried out by fire officers and a Crime Scene Manager (CSI), according to the fire service.
