‘Lottery winners who help others in need deserve thanks, praise and gratitude’ – Voice of the Mirror

Frances Connolly has given away more than half of her £115m lottery jackpot to family, friends and good causes

Super-generous donor addict Frances Connolly does what many of us hope we’d do if we won a £115million lottery jackpot.

Frances and husband Patrick have given away half the windfall, then handed another £11million to strangers, sharing their good fortune with other people.

The couple, who moved to Hartlepool in County Durham from Northern Ireland, make their money talk by helping those who are struggling – including Ukrainian refugees.

They are still very rich, but would be much wealthier if they weren’t so generous, which is why they deserve thanks and praise.

People often discuss how they would spend a lottery win. Most would settle for much less than £115m. In a way, the Connollys actually have by spreading their cash far and wide.

Let’s cheer a couple now winning our hearts.

A hard sell

By crudely threatening to privatise the Passport Office, clueless Boris Johnson shows he is a man without a proper plan.

Flogging the service to a profit-hungry, cost-cutting buyer, who would want to increase prices as well, is no passport to success.

Look what happened in with privatised rail, or the private energy companies going bust, or the rising cost of stamps since the Royal Mail was sold for a knock-down price.

Managers must do better to clear an applications’ backlog jeopardising summer holidays after five million people delayed renewing their passports during the Covid crisis.

The usually fast, slick Passport Office should not be for sale – and Johnson should stop pretending privatisation is a ready fix when too often it has become the problem.

Nice weathER

Red double-decker buses and Ed Sheeran will ensure the Queen isn’t the only national treasure at the Jubilee weekend.

All we need is the sun to shine, but guaranteeing decent weather in a British summer is beyond the powers of even our longest-reigning monarch.
