CAMPAIGNERS have praised plans to bring a former Post Office building back into use.
The building at Lymington High Street has stood empty since the Post Office was transferred to smaller premises in nearby Rashley Mews two years ago.
Now the Royal Mail has applied for consent to turn the ground floor of the High Street building into a delivery office.
In a statement, the Lymington Society said it would prefer to see the large retail space occupied by shops or restaurants that would boost the town centre’s economy.
But it added: “The Society welcomes the fact that this building will at least be brought back into active use.”
Don Mackenzie, deputy chairman of the Society, said: “Although in principle we welcome the reuse of the building, we hope Royal mail will see this as an opportunity to think outside the box and will try and do more than just create a soulless delivery warehouse.”
Dr Mackenzie said the Society hoped any redevelopment would take into account the extra benefits that could be gained.
“This might involve the use of the large windows to promote community facilities such as the museum or the community centre as well as the re-siting of street furniture to create a more attractive open space in front of the building.
“This could enable a small town square to be created for events such as musical performances or charity markets to take place safely or simply provide a pleasant place for people to sit.”
