Maida Vale fire sees school evacuated after roof set alight

A Maida Vale school has been evacuated after part of its roof went up in flames this afternoon (Wednesday, April 30). Firefighters rushed to Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee School on Kennet Road shortly after 1pm to reports of the incident.

London Fire Brigade confirmed one woman was treated at the scene by paramedics. The school is attended by children aged between four and 19 with learning difficulties.

Station Commander Hardeep Dale, who was at the scene, said: “The school was safely evacuated before our crews arrived, and we are working closely with partner agencies to support everyone affected by the incident. Road closures remain in place while we work to make the area safe, and we urge the public to avoid the vicinity where possible.

“Firefighters used two of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders as water towers to tackle the fire from above and bring the situation under control.”

Crews from North Kensington, Paddington, Kensington, West Hampstead, Hammersmith and surrounding stations were called to put the fire out. It was brought under control by 2.41pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. A substation fire yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, April 29) in nearby Aberdeen Place led to 100 firefighters being called to the scene.

Black plumes of smoke were seen in the sky near Warwick Avenue during the evening rush hour.
