Majestic Wine looking to open Truro store

National wine chain Majestic has confirmed it is looking to expand in Cornwall and targeting a new outlet. Already the brand has a store in Falmouth but said it is keen to open a second store in Truro.

There have been rumours that the firm was looking to take on the former Iceland store in Fairmantle Street which has been empty since the frozen food company announced the closure in February 2023 after 40 years in the city. The Iceland shop closed its doors for a last time on April 15 that year.

Refurbishment of the store has started but no company has confirmed moving in. A spokesperson for Majestic Wines said it was one of the sites in the city that it was looking at.

They said: “Majestic are committed to growing our store footprint and have pinpointed more than 70 locations across the UK where we see an opportunity to expand. We have identified Truro as one of those cities.

“We are delighted to have found a site that we believe would be a perfect fit for Majestic and are hopeful of securing the required licensing permissions in the near future.

“We are excited about the prospect of bringing our market-leading proposition to Truro, and helping new customers enjoy the Majestic experience with our qualified experts and award-winning wine ranges.”

While the opening remains to be finalised Alun Jones, manager of Truro Business Improvement District (BID) welcomed Majestic’s decision to look at Truro as part of its expansion plans.

He said: “We are aware that Majestic Wine may be setting up a new store in Truro. If so, we wish them successful trading and welcome the positive situation of bringing an empty store back into use.” CornwallLive understands it is expected to take up the former Iceland space.
