A MAJOR city centre site is being used as the base for the company behind the imminent shake up of Bradford city centre.
Work on a number of Transforming Cities Fund projects, including the demolition of the Hall Ings NCP, the creation of a new entrance to Bradford Interchange, and the pedestrianisation of Hall Ings and Market Street, is due to begin next month.
The work is being carried out on behalf of Bradford Council by Balfour Beatty.
In the past few days, the company has set up its base for the projects – estimated to take 18 months to complete, on the former Royal Mail site at Forster Square, which is owned by British Land.
The site was once earmarked for a major leisure development, including a cinema and restaurants, but has been vacant for years.
HGVs were seen entering the site last week, with cranes setting up temporary structures.
When asked about what was happening on the site, a Bradford Council spokesperson said: “The former Royal Mail site is owned by British Land. Balfour Beatty have leased the land from them for use as a compound area for the construction of the Transforming Cities Fund Bradford City Centre Walking and Cycling Improvements scheme.”
