A mainstay high street brand has shuttered more than 300 shops for good, after it was labelled as “not viable”.
Carpetright filed a notice to appoint administrators last month, but after just three weeks it has now been ruled to be unsaleable, with administrators claiming that of the £213m it owes, creditors will probably only get 1p for every £1. Competitors Tapi Carpets and Floors did announce that it would by the brand, IP and 54 stores, but only 350 jobs would be saved.
A spokesman said: “We are desperately sad not to have been able to save more of the business and customer orders. However, as we looked into the details of the situation, we quickly established that saving the entire business was unviable.”

But putting the business news to one side, it is a social media post by the person who still has access to the company’s Twitter/X account which has caused confusion online. Accompanied by a full stop with no words, the social media account posted a picture of a giant Rare Wyoming Toad.
There doesn’t appear to be any connection between the brand and the front breed, however one user on the site replied “what the fu@k?” while another said: “Should have posted a picture of a snake or even a rat” Should be ashamed the way they treated their staff!!”
It has not yet been confirmed which 54 stores will be kept open by the new owners, however other customers are furious about news that orders would not be fulfilled from the previous ownership.
“Poor show on not fulfilling orders/replacements from the Carpetright shops you are keeping,” fumed one customer. “That’s customers who definitely won’t be using those stores in the future given you’ve shafted them.”
According to Retail Systems, the company owes money to Royal Mail – £372k – and Microsoft – £3.1m – while it also owes Biffa (the bin company) a whopping £852k and DHL around £540k.
