The man, aged 41, was arrested last night (Saturday) on suspicion of drink driving, dangerous driving, threats to damage or destroy property, theft, failing to stop, taking a conveyance (other than a motor vehicle) without consent and using threatening, abusive or insulting words and behaviour to cause harassment.
West Midlands Police officers were made aware of reports that an earthmover had been stolen from an address in Staffordshire earlier on Saturday.
It was seen crossing the border into Wolverhampton and West Midlands Police was alerted just before 5.40pm. Officers attempted to stop the construction vehicle as it damaged road surfaces and street furniture.
Video circulating on social media showed the earthmover pushing aside a Royal Mail lorry that had been positioned in its path.
A police spokesperson said: “Making its way through the city centre the machine drove through Bridgnorth Road, Compton Road West, and even onto the A4150 dual carriageway.
“The earthmover eventually came to a stop on New Road, Willenhall at 8.15pm.
“A man, aged 41, was arrested. He remains in custody while our enquiries continue.”
