Man appalled after self-checkout machine demands 20% tip | Weird | News

A customer has been left fuming after being prompted to leave a tip of up to 20% at a self-checkout machine. The man was visiting a water park in Hungary when he stopped to pick up some refreshments from an on-site kiosk.

But he couldn’t believe his eyes when he was asked to leave either a zero, five, 10, 15 or 20 per cent tip at the machine after scanning his items.

Sharing a picture of the machine’s message on Reddit, he said: “A water park in Hungary asking for a 0-20% tip for a self-serve kiosk that sells popsicles and drinks.”

While most users slammed the store for its self-checkout’s programming, others discussed tipping culture in general, with many claiming ‘it’s gone too far’.

One user said: “At least it has a prominent 0. All the local POS terminals here seem to be set so they start at 18% and go higher from there. Then you have to go looking for the ‘No Tip’ or ‘Custom amount’ options.”

Another user added: “Had the same thing at a cubs game and the worker that was standing there monitoring the line yelled at me for not tipping a machine that did all the work.”

A third user said: “It’s mostly American tourists who don’t bother following local customs and tip like in America. I see it traveling in places South America where the customary tip was 10%, but now it’s going up to 15 per cent to even 20 per cent because of Americans.”

One more user added: “Probably a software used among various companies, some use it for self serve, others use it when a person is physically there to help you. They don’t feel the need to change the software for each individual thing it is used for. That would be my best guess.”

A final user joked: “Robots need a living wage too.”
