Detectives in Co Tyrone have arrested a man on suspicion of stealing mail and seized electronic equipment during a search of a house in Co Derry.
The arrest follows a number of reports of mail going missing from homes, with police working alongside the Royal Mail as part of the investigation into the thefts.
It also follows a fraudster caught on camera using a device to dip into a post box in south Belfast as part of what residents believe is part of an identify theft scam.
In a statement, the PSNI said: “Detectives in Cookstown investigating reports of theft of mail have carried out a search of a property in the Maghera area during a search on Friday, March 14th.
“Officers seized electrical items following a search of a property in the Knockcloghrim area of Maghera.
“A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of interfering with mail and has been released on bail to allow for further enquiries.
“Enquiries into a number of reports of missing mail are ongoing and detectives are working alongside colleagues in Royal Mail as part of the investigation.”
Last Friday The Irish News reported on the fraudster operating in the Malone area of south Belfast.
The man can be seen on footage inserting the device into the opening, then pulling letters from the box, possibly using some type of pincer at the end of the contraption.
The fraudster in this case, and possibly others, target boxes set on walls beyond gates and far away from the front door.
Residents are sharing information in messaging groups, with claims information gleaned from the post, which has led to identity theft and various fraudulent activities.
