A man has been charged following a “peaceful protest” outside a hotel housing asylum seekers in Seacroft.
The Leeds-based protest took place outside the Britannia Hotel on Friday evening, with footage showing people holding and wearing Union Jack flags. Dogs and children could also be seen to be in attendance.
Uniformed officers could be seen to be standing among protesters outside the hotel, which was the scene of riots last year.
The Britannia Hotel was forced into lockdown last August after disorder following the stabbings of three young girls by Axel Rudakubana in Southport. A number of hotels across the country were targeted as protests against housing asylum seekers took place.
The country’s first conviction for posting online in relation to the week of rioting online took place in Leeds, with Jordan Parlour being jailed for posting about attacking the Seacroft hotel.
Footage from Friday showed a woman discussing the hotel with a police officer. West Yorkshire Police said one person was arrested and charged in relation to Friday’s protest.
A spokesperson said: “A protest took place outside Britannia Hotel in Seacroft yesterday evening (July 25). The protest passed off peacefully with one man arrested and charged with obstructing a police officer.
“Andrew Deegan, aged 43, of Jarvis Walk, Wakefield, was bailed to appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on September 9, 2025.”
