Martin Lewis urges ‘stock up now’ ahead of price increase

First-class stamps are due to rise in price at the end of the week.

Martin Lewis told his followers on social media to “stock up now” ahead of the 14 per cent price hike on Monday, October 2. Royal Mail confirmed that the price of stamps will increase by 15p – going up from £1.10 to £1.25.

Meanwhile, the price for first-class stamps for large letters will increase from £1.60 to £1.95 and second-class stamps for large letters to rise from £1.15 to £1.55.

Writing on Twitter, Mr Lewis said: “The price of a first class letter stamp rises by 14% this Sunday. So if you’ll need them (even for 2027) stock up now. As long as they say 1st on them they will still be valid.”

It comes as the Royal Mail scraps traditional stamps with stamps featuring barcodes. The new form of stamps allows customers to scan the parcel, providing the ability to track it.

Nick Landon, Chief Commercial Officer at Royal Mail said: “We understand the economic challenges that many of our customers are currently facing and have considered the price changes very carefully in light of the significant decline in letter volumes. Letter volumes have reduced dramatically over recent years, down more than 60% from their peak in 2004/5 and 30% since the pandemic. It is vital that the Universal Service adapts to reflect this new reality.”

If you still possess an old stamp, you can swap out with Royal Mail for one of the newer ones by using the official Swap Out website, dial 03457 740740 or pick up a form from your local Post Office.
