Martin Lewis has issued a warning about HMRC “even if the taxman hasn’t been in touch.” As the self-assessment deadline approaches, Mr Lewis took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a post from HMRC, with the deadline looming on January 31, 2025.
It read: “Even if we haven’t been in touch, you may need to do a tax return if you have earned more than £1,000 through a side hustle, are a self employed delivery driver or self employed delivery rider, rent out a property or create online content.”
The Money Saving Expert shared the post on his X account. The HMRC post also read: “Myth: HMRC hasn’t been in touch, so I don’t need to file a tax return.”
In his daily Twitter poll, Mr Lewis asked: “Today’s Poll: Have you filed your 2023/24 self assessment tax return yet (if you have to do one)? The deadline’s 31 Jan, miss it and its £100 fine 7.25 per cent interest on unpaid amount. PS You usually only need do it if told to by HMRC plus some high earners, high savings interest, or earnt £50k+ and claimed child benefit.”
He added that you can also pay the amount you owe in instalments before the deadline, reports Birmingham Live. This can be done by:
- Setting up weekly or monthly payments towards your bill
- Making one-off payments through your online bank account
- Using online or telephone banking (Faster Payments)
- Setting up single Direct Debits
- Posting cheques
If you’re unable to pay your tax bill on time, assistance is available. However, it’s crucial to ensure that you pay HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) by the deadline.
Late payments will incur interest charges and potentially a penalty. The time you need to allow depends on your method of payment. But remember – payments can no longer be made at the Post Office.
