Megan Curran, the community champion for the Morrison’s superstore in Newlands, Glasgow, has been busy helping the local community during these difficult times.
Through working with local food banks and schools, she has been able to ensure that many families have food on the table, but is now keen to reach many of the elderly and vulnerable, to help them as lockdown restrictions become tighter, who may need help from doorstep delivery services and click and collect.
She has helped the following foodbanks: Langside, Govanhill SE, Auldhouse, Shawholm Cresent (sheltered housing), Destiny’s Angels and Feeding families; and also the following schools: Holybroke Academy, Langside Primary, Tinto Primary, Hazelwood. Other institutions she has helped are Manswood Community Centre and McMillan.
The food bank is free, every week the food banks come and pick up almost four trolleys weekly from Megan and they distribute everything from their bases. If there is ever anything they really need Megan has a community budget that she can use to buy some things they need. She also uses this budget to help schools with fundraisers or activities, such as sweets and raffle prizes to Holy broke Academy to help them raise money for Mary’s Meals.
During the course of lockdown, Megan and her team have sent out donations to many key workers, such as Royal Mail, bus and taxi drivers, all staff at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Royal Hospital for sick kids, the Maternity unit at QEUH, and Leverndale Hospital.
Other donations have gone to: Glasgow Central Mosque, Silk Temple, Glasgow baby bank, Simon Community, Kindness Homelessness and Cardonald SSPCA.
They have also helped unmanned bucket collections for many charities such as : 232 Guides, Glasgow children’s hospicel , and Morrison’s company wide charity CLIC Sargent, and many more collections are still to take place.
If anybody needs Megan’s help, they can contact her by phone or email, which can be found on her community board, or they could just come into store to speak to her face to face. She is based in the store, but is able to meet people outside of the store if they can’t come to her.
