Meghan Markle news: Fans of the Duchess celebrate major victory in copyright case | Royal | News

Meghan, 40, had sued Associated Newspapers Limited after they published parts of a “personal and private” letter to her estranged father Thomas Markle 77, in August 2018. Following a three-day court hearing in November, The Mail on Sunday printed a statement on its front page acknowledging that the Duchess of Sussex had won her copyright claim against the newspaper’s publisher.

The statement was published along the bottom of the Mail on Sunday’s front page on Boxing Day, with further details being published on page three of the newspaper.

On that page, under the heading “The Duchess of Sussex”, it says: “Following a hearing on 19-20 January, 2021, and a further hearing on 5 May, 2021, the Court has given judgment for the Duchess of Sussex on her claim for copyright infringement.

“The Court found that Associated Newspapers infringed her copyright by publishing extracts of her handwritten letter to her father in The Mail on Sunday and on Mail Online.

“Financial remedies have been agreed.”

In his judgement summary at the court case, judge Lord Justice Warby dictated the exact wording and font size to be used for the apology.

After the news broke #MeghanMarkleWon began to trend on social media, as fans of Meghan and Harry – known as the Sussex Squad – celebrated the win for the Duchess.

User ArchewellBaby wrote: “Meghan Markle won her privacy case against the Daily Mail TWICE and the newspaper has finally given up and printed a front-page notice.

No photo of Meghan accompanied the apology printed on Boxing Day – which royal commentator Omid Scobie called an “Interesting choice of publication date.”

Mr Scobie added “Boxing Day, December 26, is traditionally one of the quietest news days of the year… with the smallest newspaper sales”, in a tweet to his 73.6k followers.

Many fans also shared their delight that the hashtag had begun trending on social media, thus spreading the news of her victory further.

And ‘learntech’ added: “#MeghanMarkleWon and I am HERE FOR IT! The lesson: stand up for yourself, even when it makes others uncomfortable, even when people want you to be silent in order to ‘preserve the peace.’ Do not EVER be gaslit into tolerating bad behavior. Brava, Meghan, Brava!”

While Olori Isabella hypothesised on what would come next for the Duchess, writing: “With this case being over now, 2022 is goin to be a successful one for Harry and Meghan.
“They are launching new projects, championing new causes, commissioning completed projects and living happily as a family. #MeghanMarkleWon”

The sentiment was accompanied by the Sussexes Christmas card photograph which shows Harry and Meghan, with their children – two-year-old Archie, and six-month-old Lilibet.
