Meghan Markle news: Princess Diana’s ‘vision for Royal Family’ fulfilled by Meghan | Royal | News

Former royal protection officer Ken Wharf claimed Diana would have seen the Duchess of Sussex as the “future of the Royal Family”. He told the Daily Mail in July: “Diana would have liked that her son had married an American divorcee, a woman of mixed heritage. I can see Diana putting two fingers up to the monarchy on the strength of that one saying, ‘This is fantastic, this is the future of this family, this is the way it has to be.”

Meghan is seen by some as a moderniser – because she does things her own way, just like Diana did.

For example, she and Harry insisted that their royal baby’s birth and christening would be a private affair.

She is also an advocate for women’s rights and edited an edition of Vogue along the theme of ‘Forces for Change’.

The Duchess is also the first biracial person to marry a senior member of the Royal Family and has been married before.

While she is not the first divorcee to marry a royal – for example, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, married Prince Charles in 2005 – the fact that it has not been an issue highlights the changing nature of The Firm.

Back in 1936, Edward VIII had to give up his throne in order to marry an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, and Charles had to gradually introduce the public to Camilla over a period of several years.

Meanwhile, Meghan’s 2018 entrance to the Royal Family was relatively smooth.

Meghan also enjoyed a successful acting career before she met the prince, which Mr Wharfe claims will help her in her role.

He said: “Meghan is a consummate performer with her theatrical background, which gives her a huge advantage with dealing with the public.

“I remember her first public engagement with Harry in Nottingham, I think it was, and later at a radio station in Brixton and she was so brilliant in dealing with the media and talking to people with sincerity in her voice.

“Diana would have liked that.”

However, Meghan has also been criticised for developing her own role within the Royal Family.

ITV’s Piers Morgan has insisted she is “trying to have it both ways” in using the Royal Family’s money to fund her lifestyle, while demanding personal privacy in her public role.

He blasted: “She constantly bleats about privacy but also wants to edit magazines to promote herself and tell us how to live our lives.”

However, Mr Wharfe is sure that the Princess of Wales would have been more supportive.

After all, Diana was a trailblazer herself, both in terms of her charitable work and in trying to raise her sons in “as normal” a way as possible.

In terms of charity, Meghan’s work with survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire has been likened to Diana’s work with the homeless.

Sadly, Diana and Meghan will never have the opportunity to meet after the princess died in a tragic car crash in Paris in 1997.

Prince William was 15 at the time and Meghan’s future husband Prince Harry just 12.

Incredibly, Meghan, 38, is already two years older than Diana was when she died at the age of 36.

Mr Wharfe drew further comparisons between Meghan and Diana, claiming they have both been “ostracised” by the majority of the Royal Family who are “jealous” of their popularity.

He said: “It’s not that she’s done anything wrong, but they’re jealous of this newcomer’s popularity as she’s the one we read about.”
