Meghan Markle’s apparent desire to keep her latest trip New York ‘low key’ and ‘under the radar’ seems to have been forgotten when she arrived at the US Open – at least when it came to her appearance on the big screen inside the stadium.
The 38-year-old Duchess of Sussex, who flew to the Big Apple for a weekend away to support her close friend Serena Williams in the grand slam final, was caught on camera during the match, at which point she happily waved to her fellow spectators with a small smile on her face.
A clip of the moment, which has driven royal fans wild and racked up 60,000 views and likes in a matter of hours, was shared on Twitter over the weekend by New York-based Irish user Michaela, just hours before reports surfaced about Meghan’s determination to fly ‘under the radar’ throughout her visit to New York.
Royal fans have gone wild over a video of the Duchess of Sussex waving to the crowd as she watched Serena Williams play in US Tennis Open final in New York on Friday
In the video, Meghan can be seen giving a shy smile as she realizes she’s on the stadium’s big screen being introduced as ‘HRH Duchess of Sussex’; she then waves to a cheering crowd as the camera continues to focus on her.
Posting the clip, Michaela urged Meghan to return to the US, suggesting that she is more beloved in the US than in the UK.
‘Hi #MeghanMarkle move back to this country where we love you,’ Michaela wrote.
The video emerged not long before it was claimed by ‘a royal insider’ that Meghan was incredibly eager to ensure her latest visit to the US was kept as ‘low-key’ and discreet as possible – following a furious public backlash in the wake of her $500,000 New York baby shower earlier this year.
‘After all the big fanfare of her trip for her two-day baby shower, where paparazzi followed her every move and staked out The Mark Hotel to catch Meghan, her famous friends and the array of gifts arriving, it seems Meghan has learned her lesson,’ the insider told Page Six.
‘She was in New York to support Serena, and catch up with a few other old friends, but was determined to keep everything very low-key and as under-the- radar as possible.’

It was noted that Meghan had also taken steps to ensure that her accommodation and choice of transport could not be criticized; in place of a suite at the swanky Mark Hotel, where she stayed in February, it is understood that the royal resided in a private residence during her trip.
And having come under fire, alongside her husband Prince Harry, for taking four private jet trips in less than two weeks, Meghan chose to travel to New York on a commercial flight.
However, she seems to have put her eagerness to stay under the radar aside in order to greet her fellow tennis fans at the US Open, in a moment that delighted her most dedicated supporters the world over.
Thrilled followers quickly flooded the thread with excited replies, with one tweeting: ‘She looks happy and healthy! Love it!’
Another added: ‘Amen! PH and Archie can come too. We got their backs here. The Brits clearly don’t know what a gem they’ve got.’
Describing the reaction in the stadium, a tennis fan wrote: ‘The crowd here has been going WILD for our American Princess.’

In doing so the 19-year-old Canadian denied Williams the chance to equal Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 majors.
Despite being on the other side of the Atlantic, Meghan made sure to keep Prince Harry and baby Archie close with a touching 14-karat-gold dog-tag initial necklace, featuring the letters H and A.
In July, the mother-of-one was seen wearing an adorable ‘A’ necklace to Wimbledon in yet another touching tribute to her son.
Meghan has long-favoured delicate gold jewellery and was previously photographed wearing an 18-carat gold ‘mommy’ necklace when she was seven-months-pregnant, with many believing it could have been one of her baby shower gifts.
As well as watching the tennis and surprising close friend Daniel Martin for his birthday, Meghan reportedly took part in a public yoga class while in New York, too.
