- Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ flagship electric model, the eActros 600, has set a new record for the segment, becoming the first eHGV to travel across the full length of the UK in just over 24 hours.
- The eActros set off from the UK mainland’s northenmost point, John o’ Groats, to its most southwesterly point, Land’s End, covering 854 miles in the time, with three recharging stops.
- This achievment proves that electric trucks can go the distance when it comes to long-distance haulage.
eActros 600 goes the distance in long-haul electric truck test
The Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 electric truck used in the test stopped to recharge just three times along the 854 mile route, stopping in Exeter, Sandbach, and Stirling. Across the whole route, this truck achieved an energy efficiency of 1.175 kilometres per kWh, equating to a single charge range of around 510 kilometres (316 miles). All trip recharges were carried out using fully-renewable electricity, leading to a total carbon reduction along the trip of 1,042 kilograms, compared to the use of a diesel truck.
This achievement once again proves that electric HGVs are already more than capable of replacing their diesel predecessors. Even on longer transportation routes, as long as charging infrastructure is in the correct places, mandated driver breaks can be scheduled to take place during charging sessions – ensuring no additional downtime compared to diesel models. The eActros 600 in particular has been a notable model within the eHGV sector, with a number of key operators adopting the flagship long-range Mercedes truck – including Amazon.
The record-breaking milestone was also used to highlight the Globe Truckers UK charity, which looks to help drivers with injuries and disabilities within the trucking sector.
Trucker Ali Colquhoun, who took part in the long-distance test, commented:
“From the moment we left John O’Groats, the eActros 600 delivered steady power, smooth handling and the confidence we needed for a challenge like this. We covered every kilometre knowing we were not just testing a truck, we were helping demonstrate what the future of transport can look like.”
Nick Ford, PR & Communications Manager for Daimler Truck UK, added:
“The eActros 600 was engineered to prove that zero-emission long-haul transport isn’t a distant goal but is happening now. This successful run from John O’Groats to Land’s End shows that electric trucks can meet the demands of operators today and is an important milestone not just for our Mercedes-Benz Trucks, but for the entire transport industry.
We are also proud to support Globe Truckers UK to shine a spotlight on the wellbeing of the drivers who keep our country moving.”
Andy Tustian, CEO of Globe Truckers UK, said:
“We are very grateful to Mercedes-Benz Trucks for helping to raise awareness of our charity. As a charity, we support those in need throughout the HGV Industry. It was a good opportunity to be able to get our name seen nationwide during the trip.”
