Merseyrail tickets to Southport slashed in price

There is a full programme of family-friendly events planned for Southport during the spring and summer months

Merseyrail passengers have been offered a huge discount on train travel to one of the country’s most historic seaside towns, and described by Mayor Steve Rotheram as ‘one of the jewels in our region’s cultural crown’. As a way of encouraging more visitors, Mayor Rotheram has just announced a 70% discount for return travel to Southport on specific family event days.

Southport is recognised as a popular seaside town, and still attracts thousands of visitors every year. However, there has been a sense of decline ever since the Pier was closed by Sefton Council in 2022, due to safety concerns.

But that issue is set to be resolved soon, with Southport Pier is set for a major £20 million restoration starting in 2026, with completion aimed for next year. There is further positive news as the town looks forward to the opening of the Marine Lake Events Centre and the redevelopment of the Town Hall Gardens.

There are also a list of family-friendly events planned throughout the spring and summer, which has prompted Mayor Rotheram to implement the discounted fares offer, which he announced on his social media channels, posting: “Southport is bursting with events this year – from the fireworks to the Food & Drink Festival.

“To help you get there, I’m cutting the cost of Merseyrail fares on key dates – saving passengers up to 70% off.”

The post was accompanied by a short video, presented by the Mayor in which he said: “Southport has always been one of the jewels in our region’s cultural crown, but let’s be honest, it hasn’t always received the attention it deserved.

“But now, working hand in hand at all levels of government, through devolution, we’re starting to change that narrative. From the £17m we’ve invested in the new Marine Lake Events Centre to the £10m being invested by Sefton Council, national government and ourselves, to transform the Town Hall gardens, and today, we’re taking another big step to bring more people, more visitors and more investment into the town.

“So to increase the footfall, today, we’re announcing a special ticket offer. We’ll be cutting the cost of Merseyrail return fares to just £2 for an adult and £1 for a child. That’s a saving of around 70% off the usual price.

“So grab your ticket, hop on the train, and be part of what’s set to be a fantastic year for Southport.”

The offer is for return tickets to Southport on the following event dates:

Cristal Palace: April 3-4

Big Top Festival: May 2-3

Southport Food & Drink Festival: May 29-31

Southport Flower Show: August 20-23

Southport Airshow: August 29-30

British Musical Fireworks Championship: September 26-27

Books Alive: October 24-31
