Merton mail mishap leaves residents furious

Royal Mail has failed to resolve the delays to its postal service in Merton Borough for over two weeks.

Residents of Merton have been left without post for weeks at a time and Council Leader, Councillor Mark Allison, has declared the postal predicament “as a matter of urgency.”

Cllr Allison said: “The letters affected include important bank documents, medical letters and correspondence from key organisations such as Merton Council itself.”

The failure to deliver residents’ post will have a potentially disastrous impact on low-income families as applications for Merton Council household support grants are not being delivered and closing dates for applications approach.

Royal Mail has not responded.

A student campaign monitoring local Merton issues, Save MAE, commented: “There is so much missing from before Christmas. Beginning to wonder if it has been dumped somewhere!”

Save MAE also tweeted a reply they received from Royal Mail that stated: “We are unable to authorise the release of mail from the office or guarantee mail will be available for collection unless we have already attempted delivery and left a calling card.”

Another Merton resident conveyed the absence of post is impacting the supply of Lateral Flow Testing kits, a vital necessity amidst the surge of Omicron cases.

In the week to 5 Jan Merton Borough reported 3706 cases.

The Royal Mail helpline can be contacted on 03457740740.

If you wish to contact Merton Council, you can call 020 8274 4901.
